Six miles southwest of Sidney, Ohio, there was a strip that ran hard every Sunday.

Shelby Dragway — originally known as Pence Drag Strip — was built from scratch in 1959 and opened its gates in April 1960. Roy Pence carved it out of Ohio farmland with bulldozers and determination, and what followed was over a decade of grassroots drag racing at its finest.

By the 1970s, Shelby had found its groove. Under IHRA sanctioning, the track became a destination for match racing and exhibition chaos — exactly the kind of racing fans drove hours to see. Headline moments stacked up fast: George Montgomery's 8.54 @ 152 mph match win (best two-out-of-three), four jet dragsters on a single program including Art Arfons, and crowds that pushed the car count back above 150 by 1978.

But ask anyone who was there, and they'll tell you about the matchup that still gets talked about in the pits: Smokey Bear vs. Hemi Under Glass. Two of the wildest exhibition acts in drag racing history, on the same bill, at a small Ohio strip. That's Shelby Dragway.
