The Magic of Growing Up at the Drag Strip: Why Hero Cards, Diecasts, and T-Shirts Still Matter

Dec 23, 2025

There was nothing quite like being a kid at the drag strip. I went with my dad and uncles all my life. My father, Troy Sr, ran Pro Stock along with Uncle Jeg, while Uncle Mike and John ran Pro Stock Truck or other sportsman classes. We were always racing and doing our best with advertising JEGS and selling our brand to all the gearheads on the property.

Before you even stepped through the gate, you could feel the energy—it's so sensory. TV doesn't do drag racing any justice at all; you have to be there. The sound of the cars all being so unique, the noise in the pits, the smell of burning rubber and all the different fuels, from C25 race gas to Nitromethane, all the different logos and team colors all over the pits, you could taste the French fries and other track food as soon as you hit the property.

It's like a fair, but for horsepower and acceleration, I am a firm believer in the concept that speed and immense power bring great curiosity. There are many things to do when you get to the track. From watching the cars stage at the starting line to exploring the vendor midway, every moment felt like a discovery.

Collecting Hero Cards: The First Autograph of a Lifetime

If you grew up around racing, you know exactly what it felt like to stretch your hand out over the ropes and wait—just hoping your favorite driver would look up and sign your hero card.

Those cards weren't just pieces of paper. They were trophies. They were proof that you met someone who felt larger than life.

You pinned them on your bedroom wall. You traded them with friends. You kept them protected like gold—tangible memories of the thrill of being trackside. And years later, when you find one tucked away in a shoebox, the memories hit just as hard as the nitro fumes. I remember walking up to Bob Glidden at my first race, asking him for an autograph, and he was so cool about it!

All of the drivers are great; they have that same addiction as I do, so they were easy to talk to! Walking through the pro stock pits was my favorite because of all the different cars you saw in the 1990s, and before, this is where our Lever Legends Series idea was made! I was usually worn out by the end of the day from walking around and asking for autographs or broken parts! It was worth it.

Diecasts: The Cars We Carried Everywhere

Diecast cars were the closest thing we had to owning the machines we loved on the track. We lined them up on our shelves. We pushed them around on the floor, making engine noises.

We memorized every decal, every sponsor, every stripe on the paint. Shopping for die-casts was a great time; there was always something new or a limited edition that was a must-have! NHRA has the Nitro Mall, and it gets bigger each year! They always had the best die-casts for sale!

One cool thing I remember was seeing my dad's diecast of his 1997 Pontiac Firebird Pro Stock car on the shelves! It was moments like those that I knew I wanted to race at this level!

The T-Shirt That Said Who You Were

But nothing compared to getting a new Tee! It was your badge. Your armor. Your declaration: "These are my people."

Whether it's a driver shirt or an event shirt, or even a sponsor and brand! It was my label and my connection to the racing community—a way to show I belonged!

Wearing these shirts to school felt like bringing a piece of the weekend with you. And when another kid recognized the car or team on your chest, boom—you had a new friend.

Those shirts were more than merch. They were identity. It was so exciting to get one or three, and the experience drag racing offers is incredible for the fans! It doesn't matter what sanction, NHRA, IHRA, or NMCA, etc, it's all power and acceleration! It's what we love.

Why Revelry1 Still Believes in That Feeling

At Revelry1, we started this brand because we never outgrew that excitement. We still feel that same spark when we hear a burnout or see a kid clutching a hero card with wide eyes.

Our apparel is for the ones who remember what racing felt and still feels like today, like loud, fast, gritty, real.

For the ones who grew up in the pits. For the ones who still get goosebumps when the first pair fires up in the water box or when the tree drops.

When you shop on our site, we want those racetrack memories to come flooding back! When you buy a shirt or anything at Revelry1, it means you have passion and curiosity for power, acceleration, and good times!

If you lived that life, you already know the feeling. And if you didn't, well, getting to a dragstrip near you and wearing a cool shirt is a pretty good place to start.
